Tanjung Redeb – The Berau Regency Government is strengthening the foundation of its tourism sector by mapping 65 tourist attractions across 13 sub-districts.
The mapping is part of the local government’s strategy to ensure that tourism destinations are developed in a more structured manner, based on the unique characteristics and potential of each area, while also expanding the economic benefits of tourism for local communities.
Through the Berau Culture and Tourism Office, or Disbudpar, the 65 tourist attractions have been officially designated through Berau Regent Decree Number 143 of 2026.
Of the total, 35 destinations are categorized as natural attractions, 12 as cultural attractions, and 18 as man-made attractions.
Head of Berau Culture and Tourism Office, Yudha Budisantosa, said the mapping serves as an important reference for determining the development strategy for each destination.
According to him, every tourist attraction has different characteristics and potential, meaning that each requires an appropriate and tailored approach.
“Every destination has its own characteristics, so its development must be adjusted accordingly,” Yudha said.
He emphasized that tourism development in Berau cannot rely solely on the local government. Collaboration among tourism businesses, local communities, academics, the media, state-owned enterprises, regional-owned enterprises, and the private sector is essential to building a strong and sustainable tourism ecosystem.
Such collaboration is expected not only to increase tourist visits, but also to create new business opportunities and strengthen the economic benefits received by communities living around tourism destinations.
Meanwhile, Berau’s tourism potential is becoming increasingly strategic as preparations continue for the Sangkulirang-Mangkalihat Geopark agenda.
Of the 26 geosites located within the geopark area, 15 are situated in Berau Regency.
These geosites are not only potential tourism destinations. They also offer opportunities for education, research, conservation, and community-based economic development.
With 65 mapped tourist attractions and significant geopark potential, the Berau Regency Government now has a stronger foundation for determining the future direction of tourism development.
The strategy is expected to strengthen Berau’s position as one of East Kalimantan’s leading tourism destinations while ensuring that natural resources, cultural heritage, and community participation remain at the heart of sustainable tourism development (*).
